Certified, Notarised or Apostille: What Is the Difference?

  • Certified

We translate your document and sign a statement that it is true and complete, with our stamp. MOM, Traffic Police and ROM ask for this.

  • Notarised

A notary public in Singapore seals our translation. SAL (Singapore Academy of Law) then authenticates the notary’s signature. ICA asks for this for private translations. So do many offices overseas.

  • Apostille

For use in another country. A Singapore government document can get an apostille from SAL directly, without a notary, but only the original. If the translation must go with it, we notarise the translation first, then SAL adds the apostille. That is included in the S$222.2 notary fee. Countries outside the Apostille Convention also need their embassy to legalise it. Talk to us first.

  • Sworn translation

Singapore has no sworn translators. Offices here use certified or notarised translations instead.

How It Works: 4 Steps

  1. 1

    Get your price and pay

Pick your languages, upload scans and choose certified or notarised. Pay online.

  2. 2

    Check your draft

We email a draft by the estimated time shown on your order. Check every name, date and ID number against your passport. If you cannot find our email, look in spam.

  3. 3

    Approve it

Changes are free before notarisation. After the notary seal, a change needs a new notary fee.

  4. 4

    Get your translation

By email, post, courier or collection, as you chose.

Our Promise: We Fix It Free

If we made a mistake, we correct it free. If an office asks for a change to our translation, we re-notarise it free.

FAQ: Your Questions, Answered

How much will my document cost, all in?

It depends on the language and the number of pages. A 1-page certified translation is S$49.05 to S$76.3 with GST. Notarisation adds S$222.2. See the examples above, or get your exact price in the form.

Do I need a notary, or is certified enough?

It depends on where you send it. ICA needs notarised for private translations. MOM, Traffic Police and ROM accept certified. Overseas offices usually need notarised plus an apostille. Tap your use in “What is it for” above.

How long will it take? Can I have it today?

It depends on the number of pages, the languages and when you order. Up to 7 pages (250 words a page) take 1 working day. More pages take longer. Express is faster: about 6 working hours when the team for your language is working, otherwise usually within 1 working day. Notarising adds 1 to 2 working days after you approve and is never same day.

What does the notary fee cover? Is it per document?

S$222.2 covers the notary public and the SAL apostille (S$135, no GST) plus our admin and liaising fee (S$80 plus GST). It is per notary certificate. One certificate can cover documents for the same person, or one family applying together, if the authority allows it. Some embassies need one certificate per document.

Will ICA, MOM, Traffic Police or a court accept it?

Each office sets its own rules. We list what each one says, with links to their pages, in “What is it for” above. The office decides in the end, so check with them if you are unsure.

I need my driving licence translated for Traffic Police. What do I order?

Order a certified translation and choose a hard copy, so you have the stamped copy. Traffic Police asks for an official translation by a Singapore registered translation company. A licence card counts as one page, front and back. A Chinese licence has 2 cards, front and back, so 4 pages. It has a fixed price of S$65.4.

How do I get the hard copy?

SingPost is free but untracked, 3 to 5 working days. Courier is S$19.62. Or collect it free from our reception by booking a time. Someone else can collect it with your name and order number.

Do you need the original? Must I come in?

No. A clear scan or photo is enough for most jobs. You do not need to come in.

Do you translate my language?

We translate over 90 languages to and from English. See the price groups above, or pick your language in the form.

Can you apostille or legalise my document for use overseas?

Yes. For a translation, we notarise it first, then SAL adds the apostille. That is included in the S$222.2 notary fee. A Singapore government document on its own can be apostilled by SAL directly, without a notary, but only the original. Countries outside the Apostille Convention also need their embassy. Tell us the country and we will check.

My document is already translated. Can you just notarise it?

Yes, if the translation is certified and you can give us the paper copy. It is S$21.8 per page plus the notary fee. If we do the translation, a clear scan of your document is enough.

What counts as a page?

A page is up to 250 words. A driving licence or ID card counts as one page, front and back.

What if there is a mistake?

Check the draft before you approve. If we made a mistake, we fix it free. If an office asks for a change to our translation, we re-notarise it free.

I have paid. When will it be ready?

Your draft arrives by email by the estimated time shown on your order. Check your spam folder. For an update, reply to your order email with your order number.

How can I pay?

At checkout, choose PayNow, bank transfer or card. Card payments have a 4.25% fee. For PayNow or bank transfer, put your order number as the reference.

The upload or submit button does not work. What do I do?

Try a smaller file or another browser. If it still fails, email your files to info@wordsburg.com.sg with your name and languages.

Is my information safe?

Yes. We keep your personal details and documents private.

My job is bigger or more complex. Who do I talk to?

Talk to our sales team. They will send you a quote.
